Mrs. Susan Barnes

Hello! I am the director of choral and orchestral studies at W. A. Carter High School in Rialto, CA, and have been a music teacher in the Rialto Unified School District since 1996. I have worked with elementary, middle, and high school music students, teaching orchestra, band, choir, musical theatre, and general music and I have extensive experience in music education, serving as a participant and teacher leader in the California Arts Project.

I earned both my B.A. in Music Education and my M.A. in Teaching and Learning from Point Loma Nazarene University where I studied the violin and viola with the late “Suzuki Guru,” Dr. Theodore Brunson, and sang in the Concert Choir with renowned choir director, Dr. Keith Pagan. In addition to teaching at Carter, I currently serve as the Musical Director of The Sanctuary Choir and Orchestra at the Ontario First Church of the Nazarene, and I perform as a freelance violinist with several ensembles including the Claremont Symphony Orchestra, the Jackie Evancho Tour Orchestra, the San Jacinto Symphony, and the Orange County Orchestra Collective. I am in my fourth year as a doctoral student pursuing my Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Historical Performance Practice at Claremont Graduate University.

I am continually inspired by the power of music and its ability to bridge cultures, stir emotions, and foster relationships. I count it a pleasure to work alongside young, creative individuals on their musical journeys and I welcome parents to partner with me as we continue to build and strengthen our amazing performing arts program here, at Carter High School.
