  • Providing Services Based on a Commitment to Education and Safety

The Rialto Unified School District’s mission is to foster safe and engaging learning environments for all students. The District is fully committed to maximizing school safety and creating a positive learning environment that includes strategies for violence prevention and high expectations for student conduct, responsible behavior, and respect for others.

This School Safety and Operations Information web page has been designed to provide the viewer with information related to policies, protocols, and procedures for school safety and awareness. The importance of school safety has been a long-standing priority for the District and has allowed us to refine our practices and implement new safety measures on a continual basis.

All schools within the District have an active site safety plan that meets the requirements outlined by the California Department of Education and State Legislation for the Comprehensive Safe School Plan.  Over the past several years, the District has held various forums with leaders of local law enforcement agencies, which include Rialto, Fontana, San Bernardino, and Colton police departments, as well as the educational community, and families, in order to receive recommendations and improve collaborative efforts to maintain a safe school environment.

We encourage you to review the information links on this webpage about our District’s school safety policies. We ask you to immediately report any alarming information your child may share with you concerning safety.

    What Happens During an Emergency?

    • Earthquake – Students will drop, cover and hold on until the shaking stops. Depending on the magnitude of the quake, it may be necessary to evacuate buildings.
    • Fire – Students will perform an orderly evacuation.
    • Lockdown – School administrators will secure the campus by closing and locking classroom doors and campus gates. No one will be permitted to enter or exit the campus until school administrators give an all-clear signal. If there is immediate danger, teachers will stop lessons, close window blinds, turn off lights and direct students to a secure area of the classroom or building.
    • Medical emergency – School administrators will call 911 immediately if the injury is life-threatening or deemed serious.
    • Safety officers may instruct schools to keep students on campus, even after school hours, in the event of an immediate danger to health and safety.
    • Students will only be released to an adult who has been identified as a parent, guardian or emergency contact on your student’s Emergency Card. It is important that you complete this card at the beginning of every school year and update it as needed.
    • Schools are prepared to provide food, water and any medication listed on your child’s medication record.
    • If you speak with your children via cell phone, remind them of the importance of following directions from teachers and public safety officials.

    *  These protocols are general procedures. Each school develops a Comprehensive School Safety Plan, which is a live document that may be updated based on the school's needs and geographical location.
